Academic vs General
IELTS – Academic is for candidates who are interested in applying for higher education or professional registration to countries that use English as their fundamental language of communication. The main purpose of the examination is to judge whether a candidate is ready to begin studying or training in the English language. Countries that widely recognize IELTS for studying are US, UK and Canada and New Zealand.
IELTS – General Training is for aspirants who are looking to migrate to New Zealand, Australia, Canada, US and the UK or applying for secondary education, training programmes and work experience in an English-speaking environment. The test has been designed to evaluate a candidate’s day-to-day non-academic English. IELTS General Training is used by countries for immigration purpose. Here the examination focusses on basic survival skills of a candidate in a broad social and workplace environment. Candidates should be well informed that both the versions of the IELTS test are instrumental in providing a valid and accurate assessment of a candidates’ listening, reading, writing and speaking language skills.
Difference Between Computer and Paper Based Test
IELTS test can now be taken on a computer and as well as on a paper. Test takers opting for IELTS on paper will take the Writing, Listening, and Reading sections on a paper with either pen or HB-pencils. The Speaking test is carried out face-to-face or via a video call with a trained IELTS examiner. The results of the paper-based IELTS test are announced after 13 calendar days.
Test takers opting for IELTS on computer take the Listening, Reading, and Writing sections on a computer. The Speaking test remains face-to-face or via a video call with a trained IELTS examiner. Computer-based IELTS gives you the convenience to choose from multiple test dates and slots, you can expect your results within 3-5 days.
In paper-based IELTS, you’ll take the test in a traditional manner – at a desk with question papers and answer sheets for Reading, Listening and Writing tests in an official IELTS test centre. You’ll have to write your answers in either pen or HB-pencils. The Speaking test will be carried out one-on-one with a certified IELTS examiner. Your results will be available after 13 calendar days from the test date.
Exam Pattern
IELTS Syllabus includes different sections, Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The complete test duration is 2 hours and 45 minutes.
Listening: The total length of this section is 30 minutes and it is divided into four parts candidates have to answer different types of 40 questions.
Reading: The reading section comprises three texts of general interest that deals with issues that are suitable for candidates going to pursue post-graduate or undergraduate program. The total time for this section is 60 minutes and it comprises almost 40 questions.
Writing: The duration of this section is 60 minutes and it comprises of two tasks. In Task 1, a candidate has to write a summary based on a graph/table/process in at least 150 words in Academic test and a 150 words letter in General test. In Task 2, a candidate has to write a discursive essay of at least 250 words. Task 2 of Writing is common for both Academic and General IELTS.
Speaking: The total time of this section varies from 11 to 14 minutes in which candidates have to give a face-to-face interview. With the help of this section, the candidates are checked whether they can communicate effectively and present their ideas coherently in English.

Usually, the IELTS Test report form is valid for two years, with few exceptions.
Band Range
All IELTS scores are between 0 and 9. You can also get 5 scores as well. You will get a band score for each skill and also an overview band score.
Band 9 being the highest score a candidate can achieve which indicates you have full operational command over the language while Band 4 and below means the usage is only in limited situations.
For the purpose of study visas, the band score required is 6.5 overall with no band less than 6.0 in each module. For the Purpose of Canada PR the ideal band scores are 8, 7, 7, 7 in LRWS respectively. For Australian and New Zealand PR, the band scores required are 6.5 overall.
